iOS Remote 2019.5

We recently updated the iOS Power Prompter remote app to version 2019.5. This updated fixes an issue that would lead to a broken speed slider when used with Power Prompter 2019.5.

Please update both Power Prompter and the Remote app to the newest version to minimize any incompatibilities!

Power Prompter 2019.5

We just released the 2019.5 update of Power Prompter. This is the 5th update this year (so the 5 has nothing to do with the month May – just a coincidence).

This update adds some smaller features. Namely:

  • Min and max scroll speed settings that let you set the lower and upper bounds of allowable scroll speeds.
  • Scroll speed units. Finally you don’t have to guess anymore. Power Prompter now displays speed in Lines/Sec, Lines/Min, Words/Sec or Words/Min. You can change the unit in the General preference pane or by clicking the “Scroll Speed” label in the Script Inspector.
  • Words Per Line now has a number attached to it. This number is the average number of words per line in the script. Now you can adjust the words per line setting to a concrete number and be sure the script will be rendered in a way that you (or your talent) find preferable.
  • Holding down the w or s key in the teleprompter window will now adjust the scroll speed. No need to repeatedly press and release those keys.
  • We also fixed an embarrassing typo. (Which was very obvious – which makes it extra embarrassing).

The update is available now from our website. Mac App Store customers will have to wait 2 or 3 days till the app is through Apple’s review

Updates to our Money Back Guarantee

We recently updated our Money Back Guarantee. It’s now valid for 90 days instead of “just” 60 days. This means that you can return any purchase you made on our website within 90 days. No questions asked!

Please note that this only applies to software you buy directly from us. If you buy from Apple’s App Store then we can’t extend that guarantee to you and Apple’s returns and refunds policy (depends on your location – usually 14 days) applies.

This guarantee has been automatically extended for all recent purchases. So if you bought 61 days ago and want to return your software you can do so now for another 29 days.

PS: You might wonder why we’re doing this. Are we crazy and hate money? No, we want happy customers (no sense in keeping your money if you hate our product) and our refund rate for the past years is below 0.1% so we don’t think we’re going to go bankrupt any time soon 😉

Power Prompter: Versioning scheme update

We recently made a change to how we name Power Prompter versions. Instead of the familiar “3.2.1” scheme we’re going to number updates through a year now. So let’s say the 5th update of 2019 – the version would be “2019.5”. The sixth update would be “2019.6”, etc.

We made this change because the previous versioning scheme (called semantic versioning – you can look it up if you’re _that_ bored) didn’t fit the way we develop our software anymore.

We prefer to release frequent smaller functional updates. Semantic versioning on the other hand lends itself better to pooling features for “major” updates and release them once a year (or even further apart).

So that’s that. It’s a cosmetic change and you can happily ignore it.

Using the Contour ShuttleXpress to control Power Prompter

This short blog post is going to show you how you can use your Contour ShuttleXpress controller to control and operate Power Prompter.

The setup process is simple and once performed the controller will work with Power Prompter requiring no additional steps.

Power Prompter 3.0.1

We recently released version 3.0.1 of Power Prompter. This is a small maintenance update which brings the following changes:

Improvements:

  • New setting that determines how many lines to scroll with one key press in manual scroll mode.
  • Scroll line up/down shortcuts are now usable from the editor window.
  • Power Prompter can now react to key presses even when it is not the active application.
  • New default teleprompter key bindings: W and S to increase/decrease scrolling speed.
  • Preferences panel now features help buttons.
  • New keyboard shortcut cheat sheet window (help -> keyboard shortcuts).
  • Updated and improved documentation.

Bug fixes:

  • Shortcut labels in teleprompter are now displayed correctly.

The update is available now form the Mac App Store or directly from our website.

Power Prompter 3.0 is here

We’re happy to announce the latest update to Power Prompter. Version 3.0 is here and brings some changes like editing during prompting, intelligent copy & paste, improved screens inspector and support for PDF files.

The update is available now from our website and from the Mac App Store. To get the update simply go to the “Updates” tab of the Mac App Store – or if you’re using our direct download version click the “Check for Updates…” item in the “Power Prompter” menu.

Oh and if you’re wondering if there’s discounted upgrade pricing: No there isn’t. Because the update is free for all Power Prompter users 🙂

FYI Power Prompter now requires at least macOS High Sierra (10.13) to run. This is 98% of our user base. We of course continue to support older versions for users whose Macs run an earlier version of macOS.

Power Prompter Remote 2.0

We just released version 2.0 of the iOS Power Prompter Remote app. This update fixes “connection timeout” issues that might come up on iOS 12 when using Bluetooth.

We also took the opportunity to modernize the backend of the app so it will play better with modern iOS versions.

As the timeout bug affected only iOS 12 devices we decided to make this update iOS 12 only.

Power Prompter 2.5.4 – The Mojave Update

Today we released version 2.5.4 of Power Prompter. This update mostly makes the app play well with Mojave’s new dark mode. We now use native dark controls when running on Mojave and keep using our custom dark mode code when running on a macOS prior to Mojave. So it should all “just work” and look good. Please let us know if you find any strange glitches related to dark mode.

We also added three new indicator colors: Orange, purple and blue. We’ll be adding a color picker soon to this option so you will be able to customize this setting completely to your wishes.

In the background we enabled the new “hardened runtime” which hardens the app against changes by malware. At the same time we now let Apple “notarize” the app bundle before release. This means that if something should go wrong Apple will be able to remotely disable a specific build of Power Prompter. (We also have un-notarized versions available if you should need one. Just let us know.)

The update is live for our direct download users. Mac App Store customers will, as usual, have to wait a little longer till the review process is done and Apple lets the new update into the app store.

LCD Font Smoothing on macOS Mojave – and how to fix it

If you have an external non-Retina display attached to your Mac then you might have noticed fonts being “off” after your upgraded to macOS Mojave.

The reason behind this is that Apple changed how LCD font smoothing works. They essentially deprecated the “old” way of font smoothing which was optimized for “low dpi” displays (read: anything non-Retina) and use a new algorithm that’s simpler, more efficient and looks better on Retina displays.

While the new font smoothing looks (and works) great on retina displays it’s not so great looking on normal displays. Fonts appear too thick and not as fine as they did in High Sierra. They are also kinda hard to read. Not good.

But there’s a way to fix it:

Left: New Mojave font smoothing. Right: Font smoothing with the fix.Left: New Mojave font smoothing. Right: High Sierra Font smoothing.

It’s not a complete return to how fonts looked on High Sierra because that functionality has been removed. But it’s a good approximation and a great improvement over stock Mojave font rendering. (This applies only if you rock a low dpi display. If you have a hidpi display keep the new Mojave font rendering. It’s better on hidpi in every way!)

So, to get proper font smoothing back, open Terminal and type in the following:

defaults write -g CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled -bool NO

Then simply re-start your Mac. (In theory it would be enough to just re-start applications but this won’t apply changes to all the apps. Mail will use the new old font smoothing while Safari won’t until you reboot). You can undo this change by simply replacing the NO with a YES.
